When it comes to couples tying the knot, it’s all about the details.
Where will the wedding be held? How many guests will be invited? What’s the budget?
Wedding planning is often a long list of to-dos before saying “I do,” but which details are top of mind for couples planning a wedding in the age of Covid-19? We recently surveyed 1,000 engaged couples to find out how they’ve been navigating wedding invitations and all of the details leading up to their special day.
Making a wedding guest list can be a time-consuming process and requires balance as well as compromise. In order to stay within budget, couples need to determine how many guests to include and keep in mind that some invited guests may not be able to attend.
Not every invitee will be able to attend your wedding. Keeping that in mind, most respondents say they prepare for guests to decline invites, which is why 54% say they have a “b-list” guest list (or a list of guests that they’d like to invite if space allows). On average, respondents say they prepare for roughly 22 invitees to decline.
While some may not be able to attend, others aren’t even invited altogether. According to respondents, more than one-third say that children aren’t invited (or coworkers) and more than half (59%) say they excluded certain family members they don’t get along with. Another 22% say they won’t invite guests due to their political beliefs.
Interestingly, one in ten say they are inviting an ex to their wedding and 27% say they’d let their partner invite an ex to the wedding.
It’s one thing for guests to decline a wedding invite, but it’s another for someone to not show up when they say they will. Nearly a quarter of respondents say they would go as far as ending a friendship with someone if they “no-showed” their wedding.
The size of your guest list can be one of the biggest factors in determining how much your wedding will cost. A majority of respondents (63%) say their wedding won’t exceed $15,000.
The last two years have caused many of us to make adjustments to our lives and our plans. Many engaged couples have had to adapt to the pandemic by either postponing or changing the date of their wedding.
According to respondents, 54% say they changed or postponed the date of their wedding due to the pandemic and 65% are concerned the pandemic may cause further delays. 45% say they postponed their wedding by one-to-six months.
Couples are also taking safety precautions on the day of their wedding. According to respondents, 41% are requiring guests to be tested and 40% are requiring guests to be vaccinated. More than one-third (36%) say they’ll be holding their wedding outdoors while 42% say they plan to have a mixture of outdoors and indoors for their big day.
Methodology
For this report, we surveyed more than 1,000 self-reporting engaged or recently engaged respondents. 75% were female and 25% were male with an average age of 27.
